Hey,
I am a copywriter.
I grew up in a small town near the southern tip of Illinois.
It had a single blinking traffic light and steady Appalachian influences.
In first grade, I wanted to grow up and play first base for the Chicago Cubs.
In third grade, I was diagnosed with a stage three cancerous brain tumor.
In 6th grade, I started a nonprofit to give hats to kids in the hospital. It was called Matt’s Hats. Genius.
In college, I studied communications and bought a DSLR camera.
After college, I freelanced as a camera assistant, commercial photographer, director of photography, and later a commercial director/ filmmaker.
Over three years, I freelanced in a variety of roles for brands and agencies, including Nestlé Purina, University of Illinois, Leica cameras, Spotify, Facebook, DDB, Karsh Hagan, and many others.
For a year, I worked one-on-one with D’Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles VP, GCD, and Rodger Towsend, DDB founder Tom Townsend, who introduced me to copywriting.
I owe a thank you to Luke Sullivan, Rob Schwartz and Carolyn Hadlock for helping me put a book together.
I got my first agency job with Rodgers Townsend DDB.
Today, I work on Subaru of America at Carmichael Lynch.
I still want to play first base for the Chicago Cubs.
