Hello,
I’m a copywriter.
Although I really just THINK OF THIS CAREER AS making things with friends.
Things like photos, videos, vinyl records, rock concerts, coffee tables and ads.
I grew up in Southern Illinois.
The heart of the Shawnee National Forest.
We had a blinking traffic light and prevailing Southern Appalachian sensibilities.
Pearl-button shirts. Old-timey folk music. Church twice a week.
My mom was a school teacher and my dad a home painter.
In first grade, I wanted to be a storm chaser and see a real tornado.
In third grade, I was diagnosed with a stage three brain tumor.
In 6th grade, I started a nonprofit to give hats to kids in the hospital… I called it Matt’s Hats.
Genuis!
In college, I studied communications and bought a digital camera.
After college, I freelanced as a camera assistant, photographer, cinematographer, and later a commercial director & filmmaker.
Over three years, I freelanced for brands and agencies like Nestlé Purina, University of Illinois, Leica of America, Spotify, Facebook, DDB, Karsh Hagan and many others.
For a year, I worked one-on-one with D’Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles VP, GCD, and Rodgers Townsend, founder Tom Townsend, who introduced me to writing.
I owe a thank you to Luke Sullivan, Rob Schwartz and Carolyn Hadlock for helping me put a book together.
I got my first agency job with Rodgers Townsend DDB.
Today, I work on Subaru of America at Carmichael Lynch.
I’d still like to see a tornado.
